The HLN channel is dark. It's all about mystery, intrigue and true crime. The brief was to create a film that would express the channel's macabre personality by nodding to all six of its headline shows. Dan Gifford shot this gorgeous piece out in the badlands of the Mojave desert, using a state-of-the-art large format camera (the Panavision DXL).
'We wanted the film to consist of essentially six moving stills - key moments in each drama - where the composition would tell the story rather than the action. It's a fine line trying to be as subtle as you can while still getting the story across. The colour palette is important too. HLN's shows range in period from the 1970s to present day, so I wanted an aesthetic that would feel modern but also timeless, within the classic tradition of American Neo-noir.'
